Show Spoiler for Bleach Chapter 369 ▼
This turned out to be a decent chapter. We’re finally past the build-up now and focusing on a particular fight, in this case the Barragan one. Barragan is a little boring to listen to/read, but it was nice seeing Hachi set up a trap and let Soifon try to finish him off a second time. I think my main complaint is that on paper, I found it a little hard to figure out what exactly Hachi was constructing, and I suspect the anime version, whenever that comes around, will make it a bit clearer. In any case, I’m split about whether this will actually finish Barragan off or not. I want to think that this is the end of him, but I fear that he’s got some other special ability and that this fight will get extended for several more chapters. After the long Ulquiorra battle, I keep expecting there to be a second stage to all of the Espada’s Resurreccións.

So this week, Hisagi confronts Tousen, but Tousen is too cool for him; Hitsugaya and Hiyori argue like little kids while Lisa springs into action; Mashiro kicks Wonderweiss in the face; and Hachigen’s spells can’t stop Barragan. Reading that, it might seem like a lot happens, but it certainly didn’t feel that way. I didn’t find the Tousen and Hisagi stuff very interesting, and the Hiyori and Hitsugaya argument was completely pointless, so aside from Lisa, the only other saving graces were Mashiro and Hachigen. The problem is that there’s only incremental progress on all the fronts, and it’s hard to get excited about that. Hopefully there’s been enough setup now so that the next chapter can focus entirely on one of the battles, and given where this chapter leaves off, Barragan would be a good choice.
At least this week’s chapter of Ane Doki was nice…

Show Spoiler for Bleach Chapter 367 ▼
Unsurprisingly, Tousen came to Aizen’s rescue, even though I’m sure Aizen didn’t need it. The rest of the chapter wasn’t too interesting because it was focused on splitting off the Visored and Shinigami against Tousen and the remaining Espada. The Shuuhei and Komamura vs. Tousen fight doesn’t seem like it’ll be too exciting because of all the moves we’ve already seem from all three characters. Instead, I think Kensei and Mashiro against Wonderweiss (and probably his companion since I’m sure the creature won’t go down that easily) could be the most interesting of the fights, but I’m also curious about the Barragan battle because the only Visored helping there is Hachigen, and that doesn’t seem like enough. Regardless, I’m sure there’s now enough battle material to cover the next several months’ worth of chapters.

This turned out to be a fighting chapter that was very quick to read because there was so little dialogue, and as expected, it was a rather one-sided battle. The Visored took down those Gillians with no problems whatsoever (almost too easy), and for me, Lisa looked the coolest doing so. But the easy stuff ends here, and the next chapters will invariably have them struggling against stronger opponents. I’m not surprised that Shinji went for Aizen, but I highly doubt that he will be able to even lay a finger on him. Aizen’s smirk suggests that he’ll be able to stop Shinji’s sword with his bare hand/finger, or he knows that Ichimaru or Tousen will step in to help, or he has some other secret weapon against the Visored, or this could all be an illusion as part of an elaborate plot. Basically, there are a lot of things Aizen could do, and all of them bode poorly for Shinji. On the other hand, Shinji and company probably have bankai specials to unveil and maybe a few other tricks, so it could still be a good fight, and hopefully it won’t get stretched out too long. It’s just a shame that the good guys don’t coordinate more and go all-out on Aizen all at once or something, but then the story might be over too quickly.

I liked seeing Lisa and Kyouraku interact again, and I’d love to see if Kyouraku has to come to her rescue later or if Nanao ever gets to meet Lisa again. Yamamoto’s WTF face is always fun to look at as well. But for the most part, this week’s chapter of Bleach didn’t make much progress. In fact, I’m kind of disappointed that Wonderweiss’s companion threw up all those Gillians because, even if the Gillians and Wonderweiss’s companion turn out to be really strong and thus worth the challenge, it’ll just add to the fights that the Visored will have to get involved in, wearing them down for when they finally do get to face the remaining Espada and/or Aizen, assuming they even get that far now.
On a related note, I’m having fun reading Hatsukoi Limited/Ichigo 100% mangaka Kawashita Mizuki’s newest series in Weekly Jump, Ane Doki. The first two chapters haven’t exactly been breaking any ground story-wise - it follows a junior high school boy who finds himself being taken care of by a busty high school girl - but it’s good mindless romance comedy fun with art that only Kawashita Mizuki can deliver (main girl Natsuki is drawn a lot like Misaki from HL). I can definitely see this getting an anime adaptation next year or in 2011. You can read the first chapter here.

I was asked to comment on the latest manga chapter of Bleach, so here goes:

It’s about freaking time.
There’s been a year’s worth of chapters since we last saw Shinji and company, and it figures that they don’t appear until things look the bleakest for the Shinigami side (of course Harribel and Barragan are still alive). I’m glad that they did decide to show up though because it obviously makes things more interesting, especially now that Aizen’s free too. Assuming they side with the Shinigami - and I concede that there’s a small possibility that they side with Aizen - the Visored will likely turn the tide of the battle yet again, but I suspect that Aizen’s side will ultimately triumph after taking some losses, and it’ll all be left up to Ichigo to save everyone.
What I’d like to see out of these next chapters are some good match-ups and new abilities, like Kyouraku’s bankai. Actually, I was really hoping that Kyouraku and Ukitake would have been able to continue tag-teaming Starrk, however with Ukitake now appearing to be out thanks to Wonderweiss, that seems unlikely to happen. I’m not convinced Kyouraku is out though, and Ukitake being knocked out might just cause Kyouraku to use his bankai. I’d also love to see Yamamoto and Aizen fight each other, but I bet if Aizen fights at all, it’ll be against Shinji and will be over very quickly. Regardless of what happens though, the next chapters should be fun to read.
