「美味しく食べちゃう?」 (Oishiku Tabechau?)
“Eat Deliciously?”
Episode at a Glance:
With the help of Tayura, Nozomu reads through Chizuru’s magazines and uses the dating tips in there to try and get closer to Kouta. Naturally, Chizuru gets a “little” upset by this and punishes Tayura for his meddling. With Nozomu already acting accordingly, this results in a number of “Bento Showdowns” in an attempt to win Kouta’s affection. Unsurprisingly, our fox diety and wolf diety girls can’t cook at all though, which only results in bad times for Kouta. With all the commotion these showdowns are causing, Yatsuka-sensei, along with Ryuusei, eventually remind the two of them not to get too close to humans.
Regardless, things continue on and Omi, a wind spirit, inadvertently injures Kouta when he tries to take out his frustration on Chizuru. Realizing what he had done, both Omi and Mio agree to do anything Chizuru asks, so she gets Mio, a frog spirit, to produce her healing oil to use on Kouta. Long story short, Kouta eventually puts his foot down and scolds Chizuru for her actions. Chizuru asks to be punished in any way Kouta deems fit, which results in him giving her a “good” spanking.
Next Episode:
「脱げなくなっちゃった?」 (Nugenaku Nacchatta?)
“Can’t Take It Off Anymore?”

HMM… where to start. First off, let’s try to take a step back and look at Kanokon objectively for a second. If you’re looking for a pure (and I mean “PURE” pure) ecchi fan-service type of show this season, Kanokon definitely fits the bill. (In other words, a show just short of actual hentai.) After watching this episode, I don’t even think it’s even fair to compare this show to To LOVE-Ru anymore since it’s pretty clear now that they’re targeting different audiences. By this, I mean that Kanokon has really “stepped things up” by taking the perversions to a whole other level, whereas To LOVE-Ru has shown us that the male protagonist is actually trying to get into a relationship with his middle school crush. When you consider Kanokon’s scene of a girl having an orgasm (on her feet) from getting spanked, To LOVE-Ru looks pretty darn innocent. In any case, if you realized what you got yourself into when you picked up Kanokon and set your expectations accordingly, then you should be pleased to know that this series does have its fair share of comedic moments.
Personally, the biggest appeal of this series has been the cast. In fact, I was originally going to pass on this series until I found out that it starred both Noto Mamiko (Tsukamoto Yakumo in School Rumble, Ichinose Kotomi in CLANNAD, Hecate in Shakugan no Shana) and Kawasumi Ayako (Saber in Fate/stay night, Lafiel in Banner of the Stars, Nodame in Nodame Cantabile). (I actually went through a phase not too long ago where I watched everything I could that starred Kawasumi Ayako. >_>) A surprising thing about the cast though is the debut of Takeuchi Miyuu, who plays Ezomori Nozomu. She portrays Nozomu with a quiet, sarcastic, and almost expressionless attitude, which despite how bad that sounds, actually fits the character really well. I still can’t quite put my finger on exactly who Nozomu reminds me of though, but I would say she’s somewhat like Akari from Night Wizard. So in addition to having Mamiko and Ayako, Miyuu’s performance of Nozomu is another reason why I keep coming back to watch Kanokon.
The seiyuu highlights of this show doesn’t end there though, as we have Saito Chiwa (Aika from ARIA) playing the firm and sensible Akane (middle in the pic). Given the personality similarities between Aika and Akane, the casting here should be much appreciated by ARIA fans like myself. We also have Miyazaki Ui, who starred in Night Wizard a couple of seasons ago and sings the OP song, playing Kiriko (left in the same pic above). For those of you who have seen Night Wizard, you probably know that Ui sang the OP song there as well. I’m a fan of Ui’s singing, so for those of you who haven’t heard that OP, you can check out my YouTube video of it here. (Note: it’s a high quality “tricked” video, so you need to let it buffer for a bit before playing.) The ED song on the other hand, is performed Sakakibara Yui, who also starred in and sang the OP song for H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ last season. (H2O, despite only being a mediocre series, actually had pretty good music.) Finally, we also have Kadowaki Mai playing a minor role as one of the Nanao twins.
If you’re not that familiar with seiyuus and such, don’t be alarmed. The only thing you have to take away from my seiyuu spew above is that Kanokon has a talented cast that can take this ecchi show in whatever direction it chooses. Animation-wise though, the broadcast on AT-X leaves much to be desired (much like all their broadcasts), so I can’t help but wonder how much nicer it’s supposed to look (if at all). Character-wise, I was quite overwhelmed by everyone they quickly introduced in the first two episodes, so if you are too, feel free to refer to the credits below and the official site’s character page to help clear things up.
In the end, Kanokon is a perverted and fun show that you just need to sit back and enjoy without reading into too much. The more you can turn off your brain while watching, the more enjoyable it can become. For that reason, I intend to keep watching it to help balance out all the heavily plot-driven, “cool” shows this season such as CODE GEASS R2 and Macross Frontier. If you feel like you need a series to do the same, welcome aboard.

That spanking scene was awesome. When I saw it yesterday I couldn’t stop laughing for five minutes and then I just had to watch it again. I haven’t seen a spanking as hilarious as that since Melody of Oblivion.
I can’t wait to see what kind of fanservice they’ll bombard us with in the next weeks. As long as it stays as funny as it has so far I’m going to keep watching it.
DarkReign at 7:35 pm on April 19th, 2008
Hmm, it seems like the flat chested wolf is going maid and the slutty fox is going bunny girl.

dude…

@DarkReign
The cosplay may appear pretty standard, but after those last three episodes I’m fairly certain it will once again have some crazy twist and not just the face-in-crotch-shots everyone expects.

“I still can’t quite put my finger on exactly who Nozomu reminds me of though”
Does Vanilla H ring a bell? There was something kinda amatuerish about her toneless, emotionless voice, yet made the character soooo coool!!
:D:D:D

HOLY F*CK .. It’s a miracle that a show with all this fanservice is airing, even if it’s a late night show.. It should be an OVA or something~
kadian1364 at 10:53 pm on April 19th, 2008
I used to think Kanokon just meandered right along the threshold of “softcore porn”, but now I don’t even think it’s so softcore.
Really, there’s that train-wreck effect to this show; one simply gazes at its increasingly ludicrous scenes in an utter dumbfounded stupor. The questions, “How far will they go? What else can they get away with?!” compels an otherwise disgusted audience to continue watching such a repugnant and flamingly offensive series. In this way, I can’t even say Kanokon is poor entertainment because it’s so dismaying that there is never a dull moment!
And to think Kawasumi Ayako used to command such respectable roles. So sad…
Andy at 10:54 pm on April 19th, 2008
Oh man… Animaters are getting bold, I wonder how far are they planning on taking this?
Drakron at 11:14 pm on April 19th, 2008
Last 5 screenshots = butt spanking.
Yes, you read it right …
Also image 33? footjob and I AM NOT JOKING.
And divine is right, it just just before becoming a hentai series, also the title makes a lot more sense if you understand what it actually means.
Kanokon = Girlfriend competition
And after YEARS of annoying harem series (and I am sorry but To-Love-Ru anime is one, I accept the manga because even understanding it eventually is going to end with Lala at least it have some interesting aspects and the ecchi on it helps, anime … not so much) this is somewhat interesting to see women actually fighting with their god/evolution given wepaons instead of “oh noes, does he loves me?” that can only go as far.
Nice fanservice series that keeps on giving.
