Random Musings - The Publicity Stunt of Suzumiya Haruhi July 7

I talked the other day about how there was an announcement concerning Suzumiya Haruhi coming on Tanabata (today), which was the same day as some special events in the third novel. Well, it seems that Kyoto Animation has produced a publicity stunt of sorts by uploading a 22-minute flash promotional video onto the official website depicting the events of that night in live action (with Haruhi and “John Smith”) from a security camera point of view. For those of you with niconico accounts, you can watch it here since the official site appears to be down at the moment from probably getting hammered by all the fans trying to access it. For those of you without accounts, there’s also a torrent of it available on Tokyo Toshokan. In any case, I’m very impressed by the extent to which Kyoto Animation is promoting this show since this video matches perfectly with the Newtype magazine announcement. I expect that this will eventually make its way one of the DVDs for the second anime season, but for now, this is almost like getting a glimpse of what a live-action Haruhi would be.

havent seen it yet but i am very sceptical about live action haruhi.
No one except Aya-chan is allowed to play her!

Nothing’s wrong with a publicity stunt such as this; gets people stirring more than they already would have.
Can’t wait until the second season.

Moetron’s got the vid streaming if that’s needed.
ayasawada at 12:42 pm on July 7th, 2007
Gotta love KyoAni’s marketing, though I expect this vid will go over most people’s heads.

That sounds funny coming from someone who never bought a DVD to support the creator.

Nekonron at 12:57 pm on July 7th, 2007
Thanks for the torrent link! I’ve been trying to access the site for ages today >.>
Badgerman at 1:11 pm on July 7th, 2007
Ok then Nano-nano how do you explain the fact that they do blogs on the dvd specials for things like mai otome?
Anyway onto the actual topic, the live action thing was ok…and thats about it really ^^
Heiae at 1:18 pm on July 7th, 2007
@Badgerman-
You can get rips of DVD specials on torrents and the such quite easily. Just look at all the Code Geass ones floating around; heck, I have a few of those.
Not implying anything against Omni, of course. I’m just saying.

Man, I really want to read the books to really understand what is supposed to be going on here. But I totally don’t want to spoil the next season.
Darn these incredibly hard choices.
Hung at 1:24 pm on July 7th, 2007
Hmmm. Seems like it isn’t worth watching the whole 22 minutes of grainy film. But if you want to, I posted the flv over at my blog.
azupanda at 1:31 pm on July 7th, 2007
Oh gawd yes! XD
Crave at 1:42 pm on July 7th, 2007

Was there something that was suppose to happen. I wasted 22 minutes of my life watching that…
I guess its an inside thing if you’ve read the novels and the part that it is based on.
Maybe someone can enlighten us on what they were doing who has read this part in the novel?

“Events in the third novel”. I’m not going to spoil it, but the Wikipedia entry for that particular novel reveals all.
